August 19, 1944 (Saturday)

Got up at noon. Reported to flights at two. Left at 2:45 and went over with Bickford to collect a motorbike he had just bought to a place called Sutton about five miles away.

Neither of us had ever ridden a motorbike before even! We hitched over in the back of a dumptruck and then had an awful job getting the machine started – Bick gave up but I refused to be beaten and finally solved the question of all the gadgets.

I drove it home with Bick on the pillion (with no dual too, as Bick said). What a trip!
