February 4, 1944 (Friday)
Cold as the devil this a.m. and just after I got to the mess a regular blizzard sprang up and lasted for an hour or more. Coupled with a 35 mph gale it made quite a walk for us this morning – just like Canada, only without the central heating.
Had a lecture on Astro then they sent us up to bomb as it had cleared very nicely. We spent an hour and did absolutely nothing. To begin with there was a mild flap as the batteries registered about ten amps. That was discovered to be the starter so they got another. Then we started the starboard engine with a canvas cover still on the air intake – bright boys! Then when we finally went up our Intercomm went U/S at 11,000 and we had to come down again – bags of panic, guys rushing all over the aircraft (and it cold as hell up there). I got lost to add to the confusion – a good time was had by all.
The weather was put U/S soon after we landed so Kirsch had to land at Chippy. He phoned up and was he disgusted. He had the Liberty bus tickets so I had duplicates made but couldn’t get anyone to go with me, so I went alone and saw “Mr. Lucky” – not bad.
Got my log book up to date this afternoon. Got a letter from Mom, Barb, and a paper – which is a good show. Brought K’s bike back from camp.
