DIARY NOTES

Location
RAF Bomber Command, 115 Squadron at Witchford, near Ely

Punk - Sick, poorly

Flights - Operational offices and control centre for the squadron

Rusk - Squadron Leader in 115 Squadron at Witchford

Bick - Bickford, American pilot and friend posted with Johnston to 115 Squadron at Witchford

Wing Co - Wing Commander, head of two or more squadrons

Fatherly advice - This passage sounds like a reference to their fuel usage being high. The fact that both Johnston and Bickford (mistakenly) jettisoned bombs on the way back may not have improved their image with the Wing Commander.

Engineering Leader - The lead engineer for the squadron
June 18, 1944 (Sunday)

Got up about 2 p.m. etc. and went to see doctor. He’s giving me a bit different treatment – I felt pretty punk.

Went on up to flights and S/L Rusk took Bick and I in to see the Wing Co who gave me a little “fatherly advice” – which we thought was rubbing it in a bit. We had a talk with the engineering leader and we’d only made one mistake in our engine handling and it wasn’t a bad one – I feel very ill used!

Anyhow, we’re not on tonight so I’m going to bed early to try and sleep myself into a little health.
